In the Market for Local Food?

What a beautiful day to stop by the first SFA Farmers Market and UMD Market Day in the Plaza of the season! Summer officially begins today outside of the Kirby Bus Hub from 1:30-4:30. Every Wednesday until September 29th, there will be local growers offering seasonal produce such as transplants for your own garden, fruits, nuts, meats, eggs, vegetables, delicious baked and canned goods, fresh cut flowers and lots more fresh items from your neighbors' farms, gardens and kitchens.

UMD Market Day in the Plaza also includes local arts, crafts and music. The weekly market includes UMD Stores special sale offers, artist's booths, live entertainment, demonstrations and more. Join the Market facebook group to get weekly updates on what will be at the market! This week will feature:

·         Gilbertsons with home made candy bon-bons, date, ginger snaps, peanut butter and sugar cookies, fudge, strawberry banana and rhubarb quick breads, brownie bites, peanut butter dog biscuits, wild rice bread and oatmeal molasses bread.

·         Maureen Ulvi of Country Botanicals will be there with flowering and vegetable bedding plants for your garden.

·         Kim Herschler of Deeps Coffee will be there with with bagged freshly roasted coffee beans, bags of mixed salad greens, and cherry type (as in small) tomato starts.

·         Deb Shubat will be at the market with vegetable transplants, mostly tomatoes and peppers.

·         Mike's Apiaries will be at the UMD Farmers market this coming with honey, bee's wax candles and a variety of Jams/Jellies.

Sponsors of the event are the Sustainable Farming Association Lake Superior Chapter, UMD Stores, UMD Human Resources Employee Wellness Program, UMD Office of Civic Engagement and the UMD Office of Sustainability.

Wondering how to get there? Ride the bus to the market, or park for free in any maroon lot on campus. Metered parking is also available.
